Steady Beat – Part 1



What do these things have in common?


Car blinker

Grandfather clock

Windshield wipers

Metronome

Watch with a second hand

That’s right! They all keep a steady beat; they keep a constant continuous pulse. It’s kinda hard to think of things that are constant and that’s why steady beat is a hard musical concept to teach. Often children can keep a beat for a time but to keep it steady requires lots of repetitions. Preschool and children’s music teachers should emphasize steady beat every time we meet with children. Use instruments, locomotor movement, non-locomotor movement, voices and manipulatives to reinforce steady beat.
